What's Different: New iPhone 14 Features

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14 Will It Be Worth the Upgrade

While the base iPhone 14 is strikingly similar to the iPhone 13, Apple has added some incredible new features, including a few life-saving technologies.

Emergency SOS Via Satellite

One of Apple's biggest selling points for both the iPhone 14 series and the 14 Pro series is a new benefit called Emergency SOS Via Satellite. Apple has spent years on research and development, and this feature makes the new iPhones stand out from their predecessors.

What is Emergency SOS Via Satellite? It is a service Apple will launch in November that allows the 2022 iPhones to connect with satellites for emergency use when there is no cell service or WiFi connectivity.

Apple has collaborated with satellite company Globalstar to create this breakthrough technology. It has more than 20 satellites in operation currently and is working on launching more in which Apple will be a core financial partner.

This makes Apple a pioneer in the industry with the introduction of this connectivity innovation, though other companies such as T-Mobile, Google, and SpaceX are exploring options with satellite connectivity as well.

Traditionally, individuals would have to use expensive satellite phones to get connectivity, but now iPhone users have the ability to connect if necessary.

How does it work? Current satellite phones on the market are bulky and require intrusive antennas. Apple had to create revolutionary technology and rethink satellite connectivity to bring it to the iPhone.

When designing the 2022 iPhones, Apple has placed unique hardware in each model to communicate with satellites. Users will point their iPhones in the sky to reach connectivity. Software will guide users and direct them where to point to achieve a connection.

Emergency SOS Via Satellite is an attractive feature that can benefit lives in similar ways to the perks which the Apple Watch provides. Apple is cementing itself as a technology company that desires to go the extra mile to give customers the ultimate experience in both connectivity and safety.

Crash Detection

Crash Detection is another incredible feature introduced on the 2022 iPhone models. Marketed as "a safety feature we hope you'll never need," crash detection can detect if a severe car crash has occurred, and will alert emergency services if necessary.

Apple has been working on the Crash Detection feature for years, and it has gone through extensive testing. The tech giant gave a glimpse into the complex testing it completed during the recent iPhone Far Out Keynote.

If a user gets into a crash, the iPhone will immediately ask if the person is okay and if he or she needs emergency attention. If the person replies yes, iPhone will call 911 promptly.

If they do not respond in 20 seconds, the phone will then contact emergency services for them.

But how exactly would Crash Detection know if one has been in a crash?

This new feature works by gathering and analyzing vital information such as sudden speed shifts, cabin pressure changes, abrupt changes in direction, and sound levels of impact, determining if a crash has occurred.

Crash Detection joins Emergency SOS via Satellite in making the 2022 iPhone models the most safety-focused options Apple has ever released. Apple has stepped up and prioritized user safety this year, and such features help create a compelling argument to upgrade.

Yet the best part of all is that the iPhone 14 cost is the same as last year, starting at $799.

New Size Option

The new iPhone 14 comes in two new sizes! Joining the 6'1 inch iPhone 14 is the iPhone 14 Plus, which features a stunning 6'7 inch display.

No longer is a bigger phone reserved for the pricier Pro models. If you have been wanting the largest screen size but cannot justify getting the Pro, 2022 is your year! The iPhone 14 Plus will be available starting on October 7th.

Camera Upgrade

Like the iPhone 13, the iPhone 14 features two 12 MP camera sensors on its rear side. The iPhone 14's standard main camera was enlarged and includes an increased f/1.5 aperture. This simply means that the new iPhone camera can bring in more light when taking pictures.

iPhone 14's front-facing camera received a slight upgrade as well. The 2022 TrueDepth camera includes an increased f/1.9 aperture. Apple has stated that the new aperture on the front-facing camera is better for low-light pictures as well.

eSim Switch

The iPhone is no stranger to eSim technology. iPhone users were able to take advantage of this technology, starting with the 2018 iPhone XS and XR models. eSims are digital versions of SIM cards and remove the need for a physical card.

When setting up a new phone, all you have to do is present your carrier information, and your carrier will transfer your number to the new phone.

The 2022 iPhone models have taken the eSim experience to the next level in the United States. All U.S. models of the new phones will no longer have SIM card slots. Users must use eSims to activate their iPhone 14.

Some view this decision as controversial and a downside to the iPhone 14 series. iPhones in other countries will still include SIM slots.

A15 Chip Improved

Apple made another controversial decision with the iPhone 14 lineup. For the first time in years, the new handset did not receive an exactly new processor. The A16 was reserved for the Pro models only this year.

While the iPhone 13 and 14 share a version of the A15 chip, the iPhone 14's A15 Bionic is the same A15 chip used in the iPhone 13 Pro models. In turn, Apple has stated that iPhone 14 has noticeable speed improvements.

New Color

The iPhone 14 comes in a new purple color. Similar to its cousins, the iPhone 14 Pro series, Apple has introduced purple as an exciting new color option for the 2022 lineup.

Slight Battery Improvements

The iPhone 14 has received a slight battery upgrade in comparison to the 13. Apple claims that the new handset has an all-day battery life and 20 hours of video playback.

The iPhone 14 Plus has been marketed to have the best battery life of any iPhone. The Plus features 26 hours of video playback, according to Apple. This remains to be seen until proper third-party testing occurs.

What's the Same

what's the same with iphone 13 and iphone 14

Even though the iPhone 14 boasts some great upgrades, the 2021 and 2022 models are quite similar.

In fact, they are hardly distinguishable from their physical appearance besides the new purple color option. Below we highlight some of the phone's key similarities.

The iPhone 14 has the same smaller TrueDepth camera notch introduced with the 13 and 13 Pros. It features the same Super Retina XDR OLED display, which includes HDR support and 800 nits of brightness.

It also has the same Ceramic Shield glass protection. The diagonal rear camera module introduced with the iPhone 13 remains intact for the 14 series.

The iPhone 14 Pro series, on the other hand, has received significant improvements. One of the most exciting is the new Dynamic Island. The iPhone 14 Pros are the first of their kind to remove the notch and create a new TrueDepth Camera system.

The Dynamic Island, which is shaped like a pill cutout, is a stunning

combination of hardware and software. It is interactive and provides a fresh way to engage with notifications.

The iPhone 14 Pros also received a massive camera upgrade, including a 48 MP main sensor and a larger Ultra-Wide sensor. The 14 Pro series additionally introduced the long-awaited Always On Display, which has been a fan favorite on Android handsets.

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14: Worth the Upgrade?

The iPhone 14 series is quite unoriginal compared to from the previous generations, but this demonstrates how far the iPhone has come.

Its lineup has matured, doing away with the need to upgrade every one or two years. Some have been keeping the same phone for 4 or 5 years now, which was unimaginable back in 2007 when the first iPhone was released.

For most people, an upgrade might not be worth it. Yet for those who do, there are two key reasons why it’s worth upgrading to the iPhone 14.

If you prefer a larger display, the iPhone 14 Plus is a great choice. While you will have to wait until the beginning of October, this is the perfect opportunity to get a larger screen comfortably under $1,000.

The second reason to consider the 14 series is if you desire Apple's incredible safety breakthroughs. The 14 series introduces Emergency SOS via Satellite and Crash Detection. Apple has invested a lot into these features and hopes they provide a comfort blanket in case of an unexpected emergency. These features are great for your children as well, especially young drivers.

For the ultimate 2022 iPhone experience though, we recommend that you explore the Pro lineup. These products are the largest upgrade to the iPhone since 2017's revolutionary iPhone X.
